Abstract
An anhydrous lactam is polymerized by heating it at a temperature below the m.p. of the polyamide to be formed in the presence of 0.1-10 mole per cent of a lactam salt as catalyst and 0.1-5 mole per cent of a cocatalyst of formula <FORM:1089685/C3/1> Lactams specified are those having 3-12 ring carbon atoms such as e -caprolactam. Catalysts specified include sodium metal and the sodium salt of caprolactam. The reaction may be at a temperature above the m.p. of the lactam and between 25 DEG and 200 DEG C., under an N2 atmosphere. The cocatalyst may be added to a lactam/catalyst mixture or two portions of lactam, one containing catalyst and the other co-catalyst, may be mixed. The reaction mixture may contain fillers and reinforcing agents, e.g. glass or synthetic resin fibre mats. Shaped articles may be prepared by conducting the polymerization in a mould.
