Abstract

Detergent compositions having therapeutic properties comprise (1) one or more anionic surface-active agents, and (2) an aqueous suspension of a selenium sulphide complex of a carboxypolymethylene compound. The carboxypolymethylenes are cross-linked copolymers of mono-olefinically unsaturated monomers containing at least 25% of an acid, e.g. acrylic acid, with up to 10% of a poly-unsaturated cross-linking agent. Suitable components (1) are alkaryl sulphonates and alkyl sulphates. Other components of the compositions mentioned are coal tar extract, water-soluble alkaline substances, perfumes, and preservatives. The compositions may be prepared, for example, by adding the suspension (2) to an aqueous solution or dispersion of the component (1).ALSO:A suspension of a complex of selenium sulphide and a high molecular weight carboxypolymethylene compound in an aqueous medium is preferably such that the complex contains 50 to 97% by weight of selenium sulphide and 35 to 15% by weight of said carboxypolymethylene compound. The carboxypolymethylene compound, which is a cross-linked copolymer of at least 25% of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and up to 10% of a polyunsaturated cross-linking agent, particularly of acrylic acid with polyalkenyl polyethers of polyhydric alcohols, as specified in U.S.A. Patent 2,798,053, in which further exemplified comonomers include styrene, vinyl acetate, divinyl ether, maleic anhydride, N-methylacrylamide and other vinyl ethers, may be unneutralized, partially neutralized or wholly neutralized. The suspension may be prepared by (1) grinding selenium sulphide and the carboxypolymethylene compound together until the selenium sulphide particles are of the desired size, preferably 1 to 25 microns, and then suspending the resulting powder in an aqueous medium or (2) grinding selenium sulphide and the carboxypolymethylene compound together in the presence of the aqueous medium. Therepeutic compositions comprising the above suspension of a selenium sulphidecarboxypolymethylene complex in an aqueous medium, preferably water, together with one or more anionic surface-active agents, the pH of the composition preferably being adjusted to 4.5 to 7.0, may be prepared by adding the suspension to an aqueous solution dispersion of the anionic wetting agent. Other active ingredients such as a coal tar extract, may be added as well as perfumes &c.
