Abstract

1,089,495. Probe for smoke determination. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. March 25, 1966 [June 24, 1965], No. 26812/65. Heading BIT. [Also in Division G1] In a tubular probe adapted to be inserted through a duct wall (51) (Fig. 1, not shown) and comprising opposed longitudinal slots (2), 3, by which flue gas passes diametrically through the tube, a bulb 10 at one end and a photosensitive device 25 at the other, whereby the solids content of the gas is measured by light absorption the bulb 10 and device 25 are protected against dust deposits by baffles 12, 20, which are located beyond the ends of slots (2), 3 and act as dust traps. Baffles 12, 20 may be of helical form or spaced annular discs, and their inner edges, bordering an axial light path, are sharp. During insertion of the probe, hinged shutters 17, 21 close the inner ends of the baffles, but these fall open when the probe is rotated. Lens 23 is surrounded by a heater and a further heater may protect bulb 10 against condensation.
