Abstract

A difunctional silylamine of the formula YSi(R11)2Z, wherein Y is a monovalent -NRR1 or heterocyclic amine radical, R is an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical, R1 is H or R, R11 is a monovalent hydrocarbon (h.c.) or halo-h.c. radical, Z is Y or -(OSiR1112)n(OSiR1112)Y, R111 is R11 or a cyanoalkyl radical and n is 5 to 1500, is used for polymerizing, under anhydrous conditions at 0 DEG to 200 DEG C., organosilicon compounds containing Si-bonded -OH radicals selected from (a) a mixture of R113SiY and an OH-terminated siloxane composed of R1112SiO units, (b) a mixture of the siloxane at (a) and an OH-terminated siloxane composed of R1112SiO units and having a terminal R113SiO0.5 or R1113SiO0.5 unit, and (c) a mixture of an OH-terminated organosilicon material composed of R1112SiO and R1112SiGSiR1112O units and a similar material having a terminal unit shown at (b), wherein the organosilicon polymers have a ratio of R11+R111/Si of 1.95 to 2.001 and G is an alkylene or arylene radical. The polymerization is effected by mixing the silylamine and organosilicon reactants at 0-200 DEG C. under anhydrous conditions and in the absence of inert organic solvents, though amounts of up to 10% by wt. of the reaction mixture can be added after substantial inter-condensation has occurred. Known methods of making the starting materials containing Si-OH are described. The siloxane gums that can be obtained by the above process may be mixed with fillers, e.g. fume SiO2, and an extender, e.g. TiO2, and cured with a peroxide catalyst to rubbers. In a typical example (2) isopropylaminotrimethylsilane (0.002 pt.) was added with stirring to 20 pts. of an OH-terminated dimethyl-polysiloxane (3,500 cps. at 25 DEG C.) followed by addition thereto of bis-(isopropylamino)dimethylsilane; after standing at room temp. for 2 hrs., the mixture was heated to 75 DEG C. for 4 hrs. to yield a polysiloxane having a viscosity of 120 x 106 cps. at 25 DEG C.
