Characters to be printed are supplied in turn from a first store to an intermediate store, detection of blanks in the latter (e.g. by an AND gate) causing the carriage or printing unit to move continuously through the idle places. Once a character has been printed, a bi-stable will be set and until this is reset by an external signal, any subsequent blanks will be printed as zeros rather than skipped as above.
