Abstract

1,088,596. Descaling wire. G.K.N. REINFORCEMENTS Ltd. Aug. 6, 1965 [Aug. 21, 1964; Jan. 23, 1965], Nos. 34209/64 and 3094/65. Heading B3D. A method of removing scale or other adherent surface material from metal rod or wire stock wherein the wire is moved longitudinally along a feed path which is horizontal or is inclined to the horizontal through a mass of abrading bodies is characterized in that the abrading bodies are in the form of polyhedra or other pieces having faces meeting in a plurality of edges, the bodies are circulated by motion of a container in which they are received along a path within the mass continually to bring different ones of the bodies and different edges thereof into contact with the wire, and the bodies are formed of a metal which whilst having sufficient hardness to remove scale from the wire is not so brittle that the bodies break up into fragments upon contact with the wire. A drum 10 has a cylindrical wall 11 of mild steel plate with perforations 12; the wall is in halves hinged together at 11a. To end plates 13, 14 are secured flanges 15, 16 of stub spindles 17, 18. The spindles are mounted by roller bearings in brackets 24, 25 which can be secured to a bed or table. The drum is driven from a motor by a belt and pulley 37 on the spindle 18. A guide die 20 is located in a chamber in the flange 16 and a guide die 22 is located in a chamber in the outer end of the spindle 17. The dies define a feed path for the wire 38 which is moved, e.g. at 800 ft./min., through the drum. The feed path may be horizontal or inclined to the horizontal at an angle of up to 45 degrees. The abrading bodies may be scrap hexagon nuts or short lengths of circular section rod stock. The average cross-sectional of the bodies is not substantially smaller than the diameter of the wire being descaled, and the weight should exceed 5 gm. Bodies which have been formed by cold working may be of mild steel. Steel having a carbon content of up to 0À45% may be used for the bodies. In one manner of carrying out the method the bodies occupy less than half the volume of the drum. Two drums may be disposed one above the other, the wire leaving the lower drum being passed in the opposite direction through the upper drum. In the preferred manner of carrying out the method, the bodies occupy from 60-75% of the volume of the drum. Preferably prior to passing the wire through the drum it is subjected to a scale breaking or cracking process by causing it to travel along a sinuous path, e.g. by passing around pulleys supported by a base, the brackets 24, 25 of the drum being secured to this base. Scale passing out through the perforations 12 of the drum fall through an aperture in the base into an interior collecting tray or drawer.
