Abstract

In a method of sintering high melting powders the powder is introduced into a shell mould the inner portion of the wall of which is formed of layers of graphite flour and colloidal graphite alternating with layers of graphite stucco and the remainder of the wall is formed of graphite materials or inorganic-ceramic materials. Suitable powders are of beryllium, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, tungsten, chromium, columbium, molybdenum, nickel, stainless steel and their oxides and metalides. The powder may be introduced into the mould consolidated by impacting the mould before heating in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The powders may also be introduced into the mould in slips and examples of nickel and stainless steel powders in slips containing colloidal graphite are given. An example of a slip containing silica and colloidal graphite is also given. To release the moulded article the mould is broken away or heated in an oxidizing atmosphere.ALSO:In a method of sintering high melting powders the powder is introduced into a shell mould the inner portion of the wall of which is formed of layers of graphite flour and colloidal graphite alternating with layers of graphite stucco and the remainder of the wall is formed of graphite materials or inorganic ceramic materials. An example of a slip containing silica and colloidal graphite is also given. To release the moulded article the mould is broken away or heated in an oxidizing atmosphere. The mould is made by the investment casting process in which a dispensable pattern, e.g. a wax pattern, is spray or dip coated with a slurry and then coated with stucco as many times as is desired, the slurry containing graphite flour and colloidal graphite and the stucco containing graphite. The outer part of the shell may be built up of dip and stucco coatings of the inorganic-ceramic type
