Abstract

1,088,553. Photosetting machines. BARR & STROUD Ltd. Jan. 25, 1965 [Feb. 1, 1964], No. 4374/64. Heading B6W. A lettering head for a photosetting machine comprises a projection system 15 for successively projecting individual characters via beamsplitting prisms 21, 22, 23 into two optical paths 11, 12, whence the beams are diverted by prisms 30 on to photo-sensitive material carried by platens 16, 17. The prisms 30 are movable by the letter spacing drive mechanism via gears 39, 38 and rack 24. Platen 16 is enclosed in a lightproof box and supports the photosensitive material from which subsequent printing operations are carried out. Platen 17 supports a sheet of printing out material which gives an immediate picture without need of developing. The platens are provided with a hand-controlled rack and pinion device for effecting vertical motion thereof for line spacing. They are also provided with a gear system for rotation about an axis perpendicular to their planes, whereby the letters may be printed on an arcuate base line. Clutches permit the stepping to be controlled automatically or manually in the cases of linear stepping of the prisms 30 or arcuate stepping of the platens.
