Abstract

1,088,361. Selective printing. VEEDER INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 25, 1965 [Aug. 25, 1964], No. 36495/65. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines; power-assisted type Selection.- A selective printer for printing of sequential number on tickets comprises a number of axially spaced printing wheels 45 ... 51, which are concomitantly serving as a counter mechanism, and provided with radially spaced numerical characters 0 ... 9 and indexed relative to one another in a decade sequence by a ratchet and pawl mechanism 58, 60 actuated by an electromagnet 52 through associated linkage 66, 68, 62. Alignment for impression.- The printing sheets are associated with a pair of aligning star wheels 165 disposed on either side of the printing wheels and arranged for rotation therewith so that when a frame 22 carrying a shaft 42 on which the wheels are mounted rotatably is lowered for impression the star wheels 165 engage the horizontal ledges 168 of supporting fingers 164 to align the characters on the printing wheels 45 ... 51 and support them against the bias of springs 122 during impression. Hammer impression arrangements; plates with fixed matter.-A number of printing hammers 90, 92, the latter of which are arranged to print matter on the slug plate 94, are mounted in spaced alternate relationship in a bracket plate 100. The hammers are formed from a semihard synthetic plastics material and comprise tail portions 96, 98, resilient arms 134, 136 and hammer heads 130, 132 having projections 140, 142 for engagement with the printing wheel characters or the slug plate 94. The bracket plate 100 is mounted on the frame 22, which for impression is pivoted about pins 24 by rotation of handle 112 in a counterclockwise manner. The downward pivotal movement of the plate which is arrested by the fingers 164 on engagement with the star wheels 165 is effected by control cams 114 attached to two-tooth ratchets 125 which are mounted slidably on the control shaft 109 and driven by a pin 123 attached radially to the control shaft. Concomitantly with the downward movement of the plate 22 a cam section 147 integral with the control shaft 109 cocks the resilient arms 130, 132 of the hammers 90, 92 and the arms are released for impression by a radial recess 152. The hammers return to their positions on account of the resiliency of their arms. Clockwise rotation of the handle 112 causes the pins 123 to ride along the helical cam surfaces 127 of the ratchets 125 to displace the cams 114 axially out of engagements with the stops 120 and allow the frame 22 to return to its original position. Hammer interlocks,-To prevent impression of a ticket which has not been properly inserted a locking arm 160 is provided which engages the pin 123. When a ticket is pushed into its home position it rocks an end 163 of the arm 160 which releases the pin 123. Card holders.-The frame 22 is composed of two spaced plates 26, 28 a spacer 32 of a U-shape defining a recess in which the ticket is received.
