Abstract
An aminoplast comprises the reaction product of (a) 0.1-2.1 mole of an a , o diol (defined) and (b) 1 mole of an alkylated methylolated polyamine compound, said compound (b) being the reaction product of (c) 1 mol. of the reaction product of an aminoplast former having at least 2 -NH2 groups per molecule and 0.5-4 equivalents of aldehyde per NH2 group and (d) 1-10 moles of a lower alkyl alcohol having up to 4 carbon atoms. The aminoplast former may be melamine, urea, dicyandiamide, formoguanamine, acetoguanamine, benzoguanamine, guanadine or buiret. The diol has terminal primary hydroxyl groups. Suitable diols are butanediol 1,4; pentanediol 1,5; butene-2-diol 1,4; sorbitol; 1,2,6-hexanetriol; butyne-2-diol 1,4; polyethylene glycol; a , o -hexane diol; a , o -heptane diol; a , o -octane diol; polybutylene glycols; and trimethylol propane. The products are useful as adhesives, for coating compositions, as plasticizers for phenolformaldehyde resins or aminoplasts, being reacted either with the ingredients of the resin to be plasticized or with the resin itself, or for making laminates, e.g. as impregnants for the outer layers of decorated laminates.
