Abstract

1,088,058. Digital weighing apparatus. HOBART MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 14, 1964 [Oct. 15, 1963], No. 42015/64. Heading G4H. In a weighing machine weight placed on platter 21, Fig. 2, causes movement of a coded scale 36 having marks in cyclic decimal code, each digit being represented in cyclic binary form, the marks being sensed by photo-cells 50. The scale is illuminated from behind by lamp 40 and an image of a small section is projected by lens 42 on to a mask 45 having an array of slits, one for each photo-cell 50. There are fourteen photo-cells each sensing one of the tracks A-N, Fig. 4, of Scale 36. The tracks are grouped in three fours and a pair, representing four decimal digits. The decimal digits are represented in cyclic form and each digit is represented in cyclic binary form. The most significant digit can be zero, 1 or 2 so that a pair of binary, digits suffice to represent it. The range of the machine is 25 pounds. The E and G tracks of the tenths digit are extended below zero and above 25 lb. to give an indication that the machine is outside its working range. The presence of E and G signals is used to prevent operation of the apparatus. Signals from the photocells are applied to five four-layer diodes whichenergize corresponding relays. Contacts of the relays are connected in decoding network in which the first three digits of each decimal digit are converted to a, value 0-5 and this member or its nines complement is taken according to the value of the fourth digit and the highest order decimal digits. (In the cyclic decimal code alternate decades use the ten digits in reversed order so that, for two digits, if the high digit is even the nine complement of the digit is taken, thus 16 becomes 13 whereas 26 remains 26.) The groups are read out in succession each as a mark on one of ten leads to a computer or printer. There are means normally preventing operation of the apparatus. unless the weight exceeds a certain minimum, e.g. 1/10th of a pound. The M track (the tens of pounds) is cut away from zero to 1/10th of a pound so that, below this minimum, neither the M or N relay is energized. This is normally used to prevent operation of the apparatus but it can be overridden by a manual control. The A and C tracks are used to indicate that the scale has come to rest. Means are provided to sense when either of the A or C relays has droppedout. The A and C tracks have coded areas in mutually exclusive positions so-that one or the other or neither is operative. The corresponding relays are arranged to discharge through capacitors so that they drop-out after a small delay. Contacts of the A and C relays are connected in series with a detector relay coil which remains energized as long as the A and C relays are alternately energized in quick succession due to the speed of movement of the scale. As the scale slows down one of the relays A and C releases and after a short delay the detector relay responds to allow operation of the apparatus.
