Abstract
Synthetic lubricants, hydraulic fluids and heat transfer agents comprise at least 50% by weight of a diphenoxydiphenyl of the general formula <FORM:1087470/C4-C5/1> in which each R is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group free from non-benzenoid unsaturation preferably containing up to 9 carbon atoms or a phenoxy group, the group <FORM:1087470/C4-C5/2> being linked to the diphenyl nucleus in the 4,21-or 41-position or a mixture of such diphenoxy-diphenyls together with at least one other poly-(phenylene-ether) compound preferably having at least 50% of their linkages in the meta position and containing 4-7 benzene rings and 1-6 ethereal oxygen atoms.ALSO:The invention relates to compounds of the general formula <FORM:1087470/C2/1> in which each R is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group free from non-benzenoid unsaturation or a phenoxy group, the group <FORM:1087470/C2/2> being linked to the diphenyl nucleus in the 4, 21 or 41 position and preferably the hydrocarbon group containing up to 9 carbon atoms. Compounds claimed per se are 3,21-diphenoxydiphenyl, 3,41 - diphenoxydiphenyl, 3,4 - diphenoxydiphenyl and a fluid mixture of at least one of these and 3,31-diphenoxydiphenyl. The compounds may be prepared by heating together a 3,21-, 3,41- or 3,4 with or without 3,31 dihalo-diphenyl or a mixture of such diphenyls with at least 2 molar equivalents of an alkali metal phenate having the general formula <PICT:1087470/C2/1> in which M is an alkali metal and R is as above, in the presence of a copper catalyst such as metallic copper, copper hydroxide, a copper salt or a mixture thereof. The mixed chlorinated diphenyl may be produced by the chlorination of diphenyl in the presence of an iron catalyst at a temperature between 40 DEG and 150 DEG C. and may be isomerized in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide or gallium trichloride or a mixture thereof and anhydrous hydrogen chloride at from 50 DEG to 250 DEG C. The compounds may also be prepared by isomerizing 4,41-diphenoxy diphenyl or a non-fluid mixture of diphenoxydiphenyls in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide or gallium trichloride or a mixture thereof and anhydrous hydrogen chloride at from 50 DEG to 250 DEG C.
