1,086,778. Tape storage devices. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. July 21, 1965 [Aug. 10, 1964], No. 30934/65. Heading G5R. [Also in Division D1] A tape storage device comprises a pair of walls 4, 6 between which a flexible tape 2 is positioned so as to define with the walls a chamber, and means for maintaining fluid pressure inside the chamber at a higher pressure than that outside. At the neck of the chamber the tape 2 passes over fluid bearings 16, the pressure in which may be controlled to adjust the size of the neck. In a tape recorder variation of the loop size to the limits 32, 34 actuates pressure operated switches 28, 30 which control means for restoring the loop to its median size. In a process control system for curing, drying or coating sheets, e.g. for applying developer to a film, the fluid may be a suitable liquid. Tension in the loop may be controlled by holes 36, 38, Fig. 4 (not shown), which increase the leakage of fluid as the loop size increases.
