Abstract

A thermally stable polyacetal is prepared by polymerizing trioxane at not above 150 DEG C. in the presence of (i) 0.1 to 10% of an organic isocyanate, (ii) not more than 20% of a copolymerizable cyclic compound or a compound containing a vinyl group and (iii) a Lewis acid catalyst or ionizing radiation. Specified organic isocyanates are 2,4-toluene-diisocyanate, 2,6-toluene-diisocyanate 2,4-toluene-diisocyanate dimer, naphthylene - 1,5 - diisocyanate, diphenylonethane - 4,4 - diisocyanate and triphenylmethane - 4,4,4 - triisocyanate. The compound (ii) may be a cyclic oxide, a cyclic formal, a lactone, a cyclic ester of a carboxylic acid, or other heterocyclic compound. Specified compounds (ii) are 1,3-dioxolane, 1,3-dioxane, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, epichlorohydrin methacrolein dimer and styrene. Specified catalysts are boron trifluoride, or its complexes. The polymerization may take place with the trioxane in the solid phase or in molten form, but may also take place in solution in such inert solvents as cyclohexane, c -hexane, benzene and nitrobenzene. The polymer may be after-treated with acetic anhydride.
