[Also in Division G5j In magnetic tape record/replay apparatus of the type in which oblique tracks are produced by at least one magnetic head on a rotating member, e.g. for television signals, the speed of rotation is controlled by an eddy current brake (17) energized by direct current proportional to the frequency of a signal reproduced by a separate head (13) from pre-recorded oscillations on a magnetic disc (7) mounted on the drive shaft. The signal is applied to a circuit (15) resonant at a frequency slightly removed from that of the signal to give an output proportional to frequency, which is rectified and amplified (16). The phase relationship between record/replay head and television vertical synchronizing pulses is controlled by additional control of the braking current in response to the time difference between the pulses and a once-per-revolution signal derived by attenuation of the recorded oscillations at one point, or from a separate disc. The drive, from a hysteresis motor (10), is by a slipping belt.
