Abstract
1,085,832. Cooling rectifiers in machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 13, 1964 [March 15, 1963], No.10386/63. Heading H2A. [Also in Division H1] A semi-conductor rectifier 16 is secured to a conductive mounting- plate 22 by bonding a cup shaped member 21 of thermally - conducting electrically insulating material such as beryllium oxide to both the rectifier and the plate. The cup is fitted over a mass 20 of metal which is secured to one of the rectifier terminals 19, and its base is secured directly to the mounting plate. In the example quoted, beryllium oxide, the cup is secured to both rectifier and plate by solder, its surface first being coated with tungsten iron or molybdenum manganese. The plate 22 is intended to be secured, e.g. by bolts 23, to a heat sink 13 which may be part of the casing of a transformer (Fig. 1, not shown) or electric machine with which the rectifier is associated. In particular the machine or transformer may be in an oil-filled casing and fins on the inside of the easing wall to which the rectifier is attached may be cooled by circulation of the oil over the fins. Fig. 1 (not shown) depicts six such rectifiers attached to the outside of such a casing wall and covered by a box-like attachment (15) which may be sealed to the casing. Such an arrangement may be employed in a so-called brushless dynamo-electric machine in which the rectifiers derive from an A.C. current in one winding a D.C. current for energizing another winding.
