Winding - machines; measuring; rolls of fabric.- Cloth piece goods or other materials are wound in folds of two or more plies by apparatus comprising a rotatable frame mounted on a fixed shaft and having alternate measuring-rollers M<1>, M<2>, M<3> and winding-rollers F<1>, F<2>, F<3>, which can be brought successively into position to operate a measuring- device A and to be driven from a driving-wheel D respectively. To wind the fabric in two plies, or double, the fabric from a batch roll B is wound on a winding-roller F' by contact with the driving-wheel D, its length being recorded by the measuring-device A operated from the measuring- wheel M<1> over which the fabric passes. The frame is then rotated by hand until the winding- roller F<2> is at the winding point, and half the length of fabric, as indicated by its passage over the measuring-roller M<2>, is then wound on to the roller F<2> from the roller F<1>. The frame is again rotated till the roller F<3> is at the winding point, and the fabric folded at its mid length is wound on to this roller from both the rollers F<1> and F<3>. By repeating the process, the fabric can be wound four-fold &c.
