Abstract
1,085,726. Welding by pressure. KELSEYHAYES CO. March 16, 1965 [March 27, 1964 (2)], No. 11130/65. Heading B3R. Apparatus for cold pressure welding two wires has retaining dies each to grip a wire and each die comprises a plurality of sections connected for rectilinear movement between them, the sections in the closed position of the die defining a wire gripping opening of parallelogram shape in cross-section. In an embodiment a die 40, Fig. 6 has two sections 41, 42 with mating faces 43 in which are formed right-angle V-grooves to constitute together a square opening, the die sections being connected by a pin 47 slidably mounted in holes 48 in the sections with a compression spring 49 between the sections. A die 60 is of identical construction and the dies 40, 60 are connected by pins 70, 71 slidably mounted in holes in the die sections, compression springs 72, 73 being arranged between the dies. In use the die sections are urged apart by their springs and pressure weldable wires are inserted between the die sections which are closed to clamp the wires. The dies are then brought together to upset the wires, the dies are released from the wires, returned to their original positions, reclamped on the wires, and brought together again to cause further upsetting of the wires. This cycle is repeated until a true weld is produced. An apparatus for holding and actuating the dies comprises a frame 80, Fig. 9, for mounting on a bench, the frame comprising left-hand fixed projections 82, 83, Fig. 10, and right-hand fixed projections 84, 85 which projections together with a frame surface 148 define a bed. A fixed block member 88 is positioned between the projections 82, 83 and has a tapered die actuating channel 89 and a movable block 90 is positioned between the projections 84, 85 and has a tapered die actuating channel 91 facing the channel 89. The tapered walls of the die sections slidably engage the channels 89, 91 and the die assembly is located on the bed by retaining plates 94 and 97. The block 90 is movable towards the block 88 by a lever system actuated by a manual lever 104, a lever acting directly on the movable block 90. To retain the wires in position as the die sections are opened and indexed for a subsequent welding step wire pairs of restraining members 124, 125 are provided, each member being rotatable about an axis and each pair together forming a wire gripping jaw through inward movement of the wire is permitted. Levers 126, 126A are provided to release the gripping jaws. To permit the dies to be positioned in a loading position a cam 147 is provided to engage the movable block 90 this cam being actuated by a lever 152. In operation the lever 152 is rotated to move the dies into a loading position, the levers 126, 126A are rotated to open the wire gripping jaws and wires are fed into the wire gripping grooves of the dies sections until the appropriate amount extends and the levers 126, 126A are released so that the wires are gripped in the positioning jaws. The manual lever 104 is then depressed to move the block 90 forwards, out of engagement with the cam 147, to bring the die sections into gripping engagement with the wires and then to bring the dies together to upset the wires. The handle 104 is released, the die springs separate the die sections which move to their original positions, the wires being held meanwhile by the gripping jaws and the lever 104 is again depressed.
