Abstract
A dry mortar composition for admixture with water comprises Portland cement and a water-soluble non-ionic, modified starch such as acid-modified pregelatinized starch, etherized starch or dextrin. The cement may constitute 24-97% by weight of the composition and the starch 3-20% by weight based on the cement. The dry mortar is activated by the addition of 11-40% by weight water. Optical additives include non-ionic wetting agents or alkali metal carbonates, inert aggregates and fillers such as sand, limestone, perlite, talc, pyrophillite, clays and diatomaceous earth, pigments such as titanium, zinc and aluminium oxides or barytes, polymeric insolubilizing agents for the starch such as dimethylol urea, melamine-formaldehyde resins or polyvinyl acetate, alkaline earth metal halide gelling agents, and asbestos fibres.
