Abstract

1,085,025. Adhesive applying apparatus. BOSTIK Ltd. Nov. 10, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 45686/64. Heading D1L. Apparatus for applying thermoplastic adhesive composition to successive discrete areas of a workpiece comprises a casing 10 having a recess 12, a heating device to heat the casing, an applying wheel 14 mounted for rotation in the recess with a portion of the wheel protruding from the recess and having indentations 160 in its circumferential surface, a metering bar 30 engaging the surface of wheel 14, the bar 30, the surface of wheel 14 and the recess 12 bounding a cavity 18, and a supplying device 8 adapted to supply adhesive composition to the cavity and comprising means by which the rate of supply may be varied. Sheet S, is fed over drum 92 by protrusions 97 to the wheel 14 which deposits spots of adhesive from indentation 160 on the sheet, and thence to drum 90. A further shreet S 2 together with a strip C of carbon paper is fed on to drum 90 and the arrangement is such that one line of adhesive spots adheres sheet S 1 to the carbon strip and another line of spots adheres the sheet S 1 to sheet S 2 with the carbon strip therebetween. The adhesive is fed in rod form R by feed wheels 60, 62 to the heated block 10 and thence by arcuate passage 50 to an outlet in the recess 12 in the vicinity 47. The feed wheels 60, 62 are rotated from the machine drive through eccentric 140, connecting rod 144 arm 146 and a one way clutch mechanism on shaft 66. Thus by adjusting the eccentric and/or the connection 152 between arm 146 and rod 144 the rate of feed of adhesive can be varied. Increase in the rate of feed increases the pressure in cavity 18 whereby each indentation 160 will carry adhesive past the metering bar 30 in excess of the volumetric capacity of the indentation thus enabling the quantity of adhesive deposited to be varied slightly. The drive to the wheel 14 is arranged through a torque limiting mechanism so that if there is excessive build up of resistance to the rotation of wheel 14 due to drag of the adhesive the drive is automatically disconnected.
