An apparatus for splitting mica blocks comprises a first splitting knife 1 having an opening 4 for directing compressed air into an incision made by the knife, a pair of additional splitting knives 2 arranged to be inserted into the incision together with the first knife and then forced apart as the insertion continues, and a pair of lever-arm members 3 arranged to enter the incision and, during the latter part of the movement of the knives, to be moved so as to separate an upper layer of mica from the block. The knives 2 are pivoted on pins 7 fixed in a slide which is movable between stationary portions 14, pins 8 being fixed in the latter portions and adapted to co-operate with curved surfaces 15 on the knives 2. The slide and the elongated members are moved via rotary cams 6, 12. The mica block is held on a table 16 by means of suction via holes 17. The blocks are transferred to the table by means of an arm 19 controlled by a rack-and-pinion 22, 23, the block being held on the arm by suction; a similarly actuated arm 24 is provided for removing the upper layer of mica and a further rotatable suction arm 25 for removing the remaining finished block from the table 16. The operation of the machine may be carried out fully automatically.
