Abstract

A resinous composition contains a synthetic resin derived from olefinically unsaturated monomers, or a polyester, and up to 10% by weight of a metallic compound containing a Me-X- group wherein Me is bismuth or antimony and X is halogen, oxygen or sulphur, and as a stabilizer, 0.1 to 5% by weight of a diaroyl methane of the formula <FORM:1084578/C3/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical. Diaroyl methanes of the above formula in which at least one hydrogen of at least one of the benzene rings is substituted by halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, or a hydrocarbon radical, and those in which two vicinal carbon atoms of at least one of the benzene rings of the diaroyl methane are connected by a O-R-O- group, where R is alkylene, may also be used as stabilizers. Conventional light stabilizers may be incorporated in the compositions. Specified resins are vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers, polyoefins, polystyrene, and ABS copolymers. In the examples, (1) polyvinylchloride is mixed with bismuth oxychloride, dibenzoyl methane, and other conventional additires, (2) polyvinyl chloride is mixed with antimony tris-(isooctyl acetomercaptide), dibenzoyl methane, and stearic acid, (3) an acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene resin is mixed with bismuthylchloride and dibenzoylmethane, and (4) a comparative example, polyvinyl chloride is mixed with dibutyl tin bis-(isooctyle acetomercaptide), dibenzoyl methane and a mineral oil. The use of resorcinol monobenzoate, 2-(21-hydroxy -51-methylphenyl) benzotriazole, benzoyl acetone and ethyl acetoacetate as stabilizers in place of the dibenzoyl methane is also exemplified.
