Abstract
108,448. Maclaurin, R. July 21, 1916. Resins and resinous compounds; varnishes. -- Low-temperature tars consisting largely of paraffinoid hydrocarbons, such as are obtained in accordance with Specification 24426/13, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], are separated into a resinous portion and an oily portion by agitation with water acidified, e.g. with sulphuric acid, and allowing the mixture to settle into three layers. The separation may be aided by the addition of a light paraffinoid oil. The resins may be washed with a paraffin spirit and used for making a black varnish. The tars also may be separated into oil and resin by treatment with paraffin oil, petrol, gas oil or as described in Specification 108,339, and the oil so obtained is treated with acid water which causes the deposition of a red resin, which may be dissolved in methylated spirit, or other solvent to form a varnish.
