In a soot blower of the type wherein the rotary lance tube is connected to a wheeled carriage mounted for longitudinal reciprocation on a beam, and a blowing medium feed tube extends within and is sealingly associated with the lance tube, the beam is of box section and is formed by side walls 30 having upper, intumed flanges 31, 32 and a top wall 33 having at the edges thereof downturned flanges 34 engaging the exterior faces of the walls, and a longitudinal series of doors 39 clamped to the flanges by crosspieces 40. The lance tube is situated within the beam and the carriage is moved along the beam by an electric motor assembly 18 and endless chain drives 16; the carriage (8), Fig. 1 (not shown), includes a tubular drive shaft (14) connected to the lance tube (4) and rotated through worm gearing on an auxiliary carriage (13) latched to the carriage (8) until the mid-position of the beam is reached during forward traverse, the worm gearing being connected by chain gearing 21 to an electric motor and worm reduction gear assembly 22. Support for the forward end of the lance tube is provided by a bearing assembly (7), Fig. 2 (not shown), including four balls (7A) nested in small-ball cluster bearings enclosed in casings (52) carried by a plate (53) rockable fore and aft about transverse pins (54).
