Abstract

1,084,262. Filling and sealing envelopes. MATH BAUERLE G.m.b.H. Sept. 4, 1964 [Sept. 7, 1963], No. 36370/64. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B6] A machine for putting enclosures into envelopes has the enclosures and envelopes stored in separate magazines which are followed by parallel tables on which the envelopes and enclosures move to an inserting position, the envelope flaps being automatically opened and moistened on the way to the inserting station where the enclosures are inserted and from where the filled envelopes are discharged to be sealed. Envelope feed.-Envelopes 6 are stacked in a magazine 1 with their middle portions resting on a tube 8. A suction cup 9 on a rocking lever 10 is pressed against the envelope under its flap 7 and the lever turns to the position shown in Fig. 3 thus bending the envelope over the tube 8 so that idlers 16, 17, on an arm 20 which pivots to move them towards the envelope, gripthe latter and withdraw it from the magazine (Fig. 4, not shown) and then transfer it on to a conveyer. A hole (27) (Fig. 7, not shown) in the table (22) has a compressed air pipe (28) (Fig. 6, not shown) opposite it and as the envelope blocks the hole the air lifts the flap (7) slightly. The envelope is gripped by rollers (32), (33) and arms (29) swing down below the flap (7) and then up to raise the flap which is completely opened as the envelope passes through the rollers .(32),33 ,As the envelope passes through rollers (35), (35<SP>1</SP>) (Fig. 1, not shown) the adhesive on the flap (7) is moistened and the envelope is passed to the inserting station. Enclosure feed.-An enclosure sheet 51 (Fig. 9)` is transferred to an upper table 53 by action similar to that for transferring the envelopes to the table 22; and thence to the inserting station. When a plurality of documents (each from different magazines) are to be put in the same envelope, the envelope magazine is provided downstream of the last enclosure magazine. Inserting station.-The envelope is transferred on to a flap 38, hinged at 39, which is in the dashed line position in Fig. 9. Stops 45, (46) (Fig. 10, not shown) pivot up to engage behind the envelope and the flap 38 swings up, so that the envelope forms an extension of the upper table 65. A jet of compressed air blows the envelope open and the flat bars 62 slide into the envelope. The enclosures are then slid into the envelope by reciprocating pawls 57. The air from the jet also slightly lifts the enclosures as they enter so that they do not catch on any envelope window element. The flap 38 is pivoted to the chain dot line position and the envelope pushed into the bite of rollers 66, 67 by movable stops 42. As the envelope passes between these rollers the flap is folded down and sealed. The envelope then passes into a basket (69) (Fig. 1). In another embodiment the envelopes are stored with their flaps open (Fig. 11, not shown).
