Abstract

1,083,850. Crystallizing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 17, 1964 [Dec. 3, 1963], No. 47678/63. Heading B1G. In the building up of a crystalline layer on a cooled surface from a circulating liquid in the form of a solution or melt, control is effected by adding heat to the liquid before reaching the cooled surface in a progressively decreasing amount by means of a heat exchanger and/or by removing heat from the cooled surface in a progressively increasing amount by means of a coolant of decreasing temperature and/or increasing rate of flow. The turbulence of the circulating liquid may be adjusted during the crystallization process. Crystallization may be effected in a plurality of tubes in series or in a bundle of tubes. The cooled surface may be finned. The coolant may be a fluid flowing parallel to the crystallizing liquid or may be a cross flow of air. The crystalline layer may be melted by replacing the coolant by a heating fluid or by direct contact with heated melt of the same composition. A thin crystalline layer may be left to seed further crystal formation. The method may be used to purify naphthalene, parazylene, adiponitrile, or methylcyclohexyl-4-methylphenol. As shown, liquid passes from a feed vessel B through a heat exchanger Q and a pump A to a crystallizer tube C having a jacket D whence it is recycled to vessel B. After completion of a crystallization cycle, coolant is replaced by heating fluid in jacket D and the melt obtained as product in vessel M. Further feed may be mixed with the residual liquid. The residual liquid is eventually passed to receiver O.
