Abstract

Curable, fluid compositions comprise (1) a liquid or semi-solid glycidyl polyether of a polyhydric phenol and (2) at least one monoglycidyl ether of a monomethylolated monohydric phenol, in which only the phenolic hydroxyl is etherified, in a quantity of 1-50% by weight of the mixture. The compositions are curable by means of the conventional epoxy resin curing agents. The glycidyl polyethers may also be methylolated. The compositions may also contain other conventional additives. They are useful for the manufacture of articles by casting, potting, coating or adhesively uniting them.ALSO:Monoglycidyl ethers of monomethylolated monohydric phenols in which only the phenolic hydroxyl groups are etherified are prepared by reacting the methylolphenols with epichlorohydrin in a MeOH/H2O mixture in the presence of NaOH. The examples describe the preparation of a mixture of the ortho and para isomers of the glycidyl ether of methylolphenol; and the glycidyl ethers of methylol-p-cresol, methylol-o-allyl-phenol and methylol-4-nonylphenol. The monomethylolphenols are prepared by the reaction of the corresponding phenols with formalin in a MeOH/H2O mixture in the presence of NaOH.
