Abstract

1,083,464. Irradiation apparatus. OSTERREICHISCHE STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FœR ATOMENERGIE G.m.b.H. Nov. 27, 1964 [Nov. 28, 1963; Aug. 17, 1964], No. 48428/64. Heading H5R. Various arrangements for the irradiation, by #-rays, of gases, liquids or solids, utilize thin plates or layers of radio-active #-emitting material substantially surrounding the material. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), a tube of shielding material (1) is carried by a member (5) which has a layer (2) of #-emitting material or a protective layer (3). The outer shield (1) is necessary to absorb back-scattered electrons, bremsstrahlung radiation and any γ-radiation which may be produced. The effect of some of these radiations can increase the dose. Irradiation of varnishes on wires, is possible with the apparatus, or of grain, liquids or gases. Tubes having inserts in the forms of laminas or honey-combs may be used (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). Foils or rolled stock may be irradiated by passing them through two plates having radio-active surfaces (Fig. 6, not shown). For small amounts of liquid &c., rods with activated surfaces are rotated in a vessel (Fig. 5, not shown). Also described are irradiation cells for liquids each of which comprises top and bottom annular members (21) (Fig. 7, not shown), the side walls being made up by radio-active discs. A number of cells may be connected in a row, the radioactive discs (26) (Fig. 12, not shown), being held in position when the cells are bolted together. The discs may be of powdered radio-active material between metal foils or actually of solid material. Partition walls (25) within the cell, to guide the flow of liquid, may have radioactive layers. Other arrangements include cylindrical receptacles and arrangements for mixing or vibrating the matter to be irradiated. A requirement of all the arrangements is that the distance between radio-active walls should be less than the range of the #-radiation through the matter to be irradiated. Radioactive materials used may be strontium 90 and yttrium 90, promethium and tritium.
