Abstract

1,083,402. Collimator. A. SHEWCHENKO. April 20, 1965 [Jan. 6, 1965], No. 16576/65. Heading H5R. An adjustable collimator to define the area of the beam incident on a patient in radiotherapy, comprises four longitudinal members 1-4, spaced equally around a central longitudinal axis, each member 1-4, having spaced along it a number of transverse limbs (e.g. 12, 14, 16, 18), the gaps between limbs on one member 1-4, being occupied by the limbs on an adjacent member. At the end of the collimator adjacent a radio-active source (105, Fig. 5, not shown), the members 1-4 have hinge brackets, e.g. (21, Figs. 3, 4, not shown), by which they are hinged to an annular member (102) to which is attached the collimator frame or casing (100). The collimator may rotate as a about its own axis by virtue of a flange (110) at the end of the frame (100) away from the source, being mounted on ball-bearings in a unit ring (112) attached to the radiotherapy unit. An outer casing (106) and back plate (103) similarly form part of this unit. Adjustment of the collimator members 1-4 to cause them to pivot out or inwardly, with respect to the central axis, on the hinges, is through two drive shafts (150, 160) the former controlling the side members, the latter the top and bottom members. The front ends of members 1-4 carry guide brackets (19, 29 &c.) on which are mounted rollers (170) on shafts (171). Associated with the collimator frame (100) is a housing in which the drive shafts (150, 160) are accommodated and also annular cam members (130, 135) which are rotatable by the shafts (150, 160) respectively. The cam members each carry two opposed cam track arms (134, 136) in which the rollers (170) are forced to move when the cam members rotate, thus carrying the limbs 1-4 into the positions required. The material used for the collimator, in order to absorb γ-radiation, may be uranium, tungsten, lead, iron &c. A feature of the shape of the transverse limbs of the collimator is that they are formed as segments of individual annuli, based on the same centre of curvature.
