Compiling and tabulating statistics mechanically.-A machine for checking the correctness of the positions of holes punched in record-cards comprises a row of key-operated pins or plungers, the depression of which, through speciallymounted levers, releases or fails to release an escapement controlling the card-carrier feed, according as to whether the pin has or has not registered with a hole in the card. Each pin 40 is actuated by a key K through a lever 20 having its opposite end resting against the lower end of a spring pin 21. If the correct hole is below the pin depressed so as to allow free movement, the lever 20 rocks on the pin 21 as a fulcrum and effects a full stroke on a bail 24. If, however, the movement of the depressed pin 40 is arrested by reason of no hole being below the pin, the lever 20 rocks on the top of the pin 40 as a fulcrum, against the spring pin 21 (see Fig. 7), and the bail 24 is only moved to an extent which is taken up by the releasing - mechanism. This latter consists of a pawl 28 and detent 31 mounted on the pivot 25 of the bail 24 and engaging a ratchet wheel 30 of a spring drum M. The detent 31, loose on the pivot 25, is actuated by a pin 29 on an extension of the pawl 28 and working loosely in a hole in the detent 31 so as not to actuate the latter in case of a small movement of the bail pivot 25. A wheel 15 on the drum M gears with a pinion 16 and drives the card carrier 11 through the pinion and rack 18, 19. An additional ratchet with cut-away teeth, to which the pawl 28 is shifted by a special key, enables the card to be moved through several spaces at once. By means of a key L, the pawl can be released from both the ratchets, so as to allow the card carrier to be returned to its initial position at any time.
