Abstract

Natural or synthetic rubber latex is reinforced by adding a reinforcing agent to a water-soluble phenolic resin carrier compatible with both the reinforcing agent and the rubber component of the latex to form a pre-blend thereof, and adding the pre-blend, optionally after aging, to the rubber latex. In the examples, carbon black is added to an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution of a resorcinol/formaldehyde resin and after aging this pre-blend is added to a styrene/butadiene copolymer latex, the composition so formed also being aged. The aged latex composition is finally compounded with sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid, diphenyl guanidine and benzothiazyl disulphide, and is heat cured under pressure. Other rubbers specified are natural rubber and vinylpyridine/diene rubber copolymers. The reinforced latex may be used, for making gloves by dip coating a form, or for coating fabrics (see Division B2).ALSO:A composition for coating fabrics comprises a natural or synthetic rubber latex reinforced by adding a reinforcing agent to a water soluble phenolic resin carrier compatible with both the reinforcing agent and the rubber component of the latex to form a pre-blend thereof, and adding the pre-blend, optionally after ageing, to the rubber latex. In the examples, carbon black is added to an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution of a resorcinol/formaldehyde resin and after ageing this pre-blend is added to a styrene/butadiene copolymer latex, the composition so formed also being aged. The aged latex composition is finally compounded with sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid, diphenyl guanidine and benzothiazyl disulphide, and is heat cured under pressure. Other rubbers specified are natural rubber and vinylpyridine/diene rubber copolymers. The reinforced latex may be used for making gloves by dipping a form into it, for coating fabrics, and for building up a tyre tread on a pneumatic tyre carcass of fabric plies by rotation of the carcass in the reinforced latex and drying each layer of latex as it is deposited thereon until the desired thickness of tread is produced and then curing in a mould.
