Abstract
1,082,822. Disc brakes. H. KLAUE. Aug. 25, 1964, No. 34815/64. Heading F2E. A vehicle disc brake comprises a rotatable brake disc 6 which is formed with an annular outwardly opening U-shaped peripheral groove, brake segments 36 and 37 carrying friction linings 39 and 40 disposed in said groove, and a wedge member 34 acting via rollers or balls 35 in inclined ramps or recesses associated with the brake segments to initiate braking by urging the segments apart towards the respective walls of the groove, movement of said wedge member being in a direction chordwise of the disc. The wedge is actuated by an hydraulic piston cylinder assembly 27, 30 which is carried by an elongated member 18 fixed by bolts 17 to a stationary brake carrier 15. The brake segments are also supported on this carrier by spring metal backing plate members 22 and 23 which are secured to said segments by rivets 38 and bolted to the member 18 at 19. Said backing plate members have punched-out flanges 22<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>1</SP> which complement projections on the brake segments to form the ball or roller ramps. Provision of the backing plates enable the brake segments to be formed as light metal die castings. In the embodiment of Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the brake segments and wedge member are carried by a pair of removable pins (45, 46) in an inverted channel section brake carrier (43) straddling the disc periphery. An hydraulic piston/ cylinder actuator (59) is mounted at one end of the said carrier and a removable cover (63) at the other. By removing the cover and then said pins, the brake segments and wedge member may be removed circumferentially. Tension springs (53) disposed axially between the brake segments retain the said segments, wedge member and their associated balls or roller together as a unit. A spring (62) disposed between the end of the wedge member and the cap ensures return of the former after brake release. In a further embodiment, Figs. 7-10 (not shown), the brake segments and wedge are mounted in a light metal cast C-shaped brake carrier (81) which is bolted to a fixed sheet metal bracket (77) by studs (79) passing through open-ended slots therein. The carrier has an integral extension 86 containing the actuating piston of the wedge member. When nuts engaging the studs are released, the carrier and brake segments can be removed radially as a complete unit. Radial ribs are provided on the disc for stiffening and cooling purposes.
