To lengthen the life of a cutter pick the pick is formed to have a linear cutting edge defined by two mutually inclined faces defining rake and clearance faces with positive rake and clearance angles so that as the pick becomes worn in use it can be displaced to another position in the holder means therefore so that the rake and clearance faces become interchanged whilst positive rake and clearance angles at the tip are maintained. discharge openings incorporated a pump 2 having a casing 3, within which is a movable diaphragm 4 acting as a common wall between a soil chamber 5 and a flushing water chamber 6, an inlet valve 7 in the chamber 5 leading from the basin 1, and an outlet valve 8 controlling a discharge opening therefrom, an inlet valve 9 in the chamber 6 controlling water flow thereinto, an outlet valve 11 controlling flow therefrom to the discharge openings, and a shaft 12 in the casing 1 rotatable about its axis and movable axially, coupled to the diaphragm 4 (by a plate 22 and a pin 21 thereon in a slot 20 of the lever 19), and operatively engageable with the inlet and outlet valves 9, 10, so that rotation thereof vibrates the diaphragm 4, whilst axial movement to one position closes the valve 9 and opens the valve 11. The valves 9 and 11 are respectively engaged by arms 25, 26 of a lever 23, mounted on a pivot 24 and engageable by an end 28 of the shaft 12, spring- loaded to move to close the valve 9 and open the valve 11 and operated by a handle 14, pivoted thereto at 15 and at 16 to a bracket 13, which can only move rotatably with the shaft 12.
