1,081,887. Making self-tapping, screws. NATIONAL LOCK CO. Aug. 2, 1965, No. 32981/65. Headings B3A and B3N. In a method of making a self-tapping screw, a helical thread is rolled on to a blank having at one end a head 11 and at the other end a tapered portion with uniformly spaced flattened areas 15 and arcuate surfaces 16. The blank is rolled between platens to form a thread which at the tapered end is interrupted by relief areas 21 and therebetween is formed with leading swaging edges 22, lands 23 concentric with the screw axis and trailing edge portions 24.
