Abstract
Seeds, e.g. of wheat, barley, oats, brassicae, legumes, salad crops and ornamental plants, are coated with at least 2%, e.g. 2 to 15%, of their weight of metaldehyde, to protect them from attack by molluscs, such as slugs. The seeds may be coated by being mixed with dry, preferably finely powdered metaldehyde. Alternatively, the seeds may be coated by being mixed or sprayed with a liquid composition comprising 20 to 70% by weight of metaldehyde, in the form of particles having an average size less than 10 microns, dispersed in water, or in a non-phytotoxic, preferably volatile, organic liquid, such as ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol or kerosene. The composition may also comprise: a specified surface-active agent, a specified powdered solid diluent including, if desired, sterile seeds or bran for attracting slugs, a specified suspending agent, a specified non-phytotoxic adhesive, a specified fixing agent, a specified alkaline stabilizer, and a pesticide, e.g. a fungicide or insecticide. The coated seeds may then be dried, e.g. at 20 DEG C. According to Example 1, wheat seeds are rolled for 10 minutes in castor oil, which functions as an adhesive. Powdered metaldehyde is then added, and rolling is continued for another 10 minutes, to coat the seeds with 8.8% by weight of metaldehyde.ALSO:A coating composition, for protecting seeds (see Division A2) from attack by mollusca such as slugs, comprises 20-70%, by weight, of metaldehyde in the form of particles having an average size less than 10 microns dispersed in water, or in a non-phytotoxic, preferably volatile, organic liquid, such as ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol or kerosene. The composition may also comprise: a specified surface-active agent, a specified powdered solid diluent including, if desired, sterile seeds or bran for attracting slugs, a specified suspending agent, a specified non-phytotoxic adhesive, a specified fixing agent, a specified alkaline stabilizer, and a pesticide, such as a fungicide or insecticide. Dry metaldehyde alone, preferably finely powdered, may be used. The composition, preferably aqueous, can be used for treating soil.
