Abstract

Injectable non-aqueous oil compositions for intravenous, intra-arterial or intra-lymphatic administration comprise a sterile mixture of one or more metabolizable, optionally brominated, or iodinated natural or synthetic esters of C11 to C24 fatty acids, being liquid at 37 DEG C., with 0.5 to 5% by weight of the composition of at least one non-toxic surface active agent having a solubility in said ester of at least 0.5% by weight at 37 DEG C. By non-toxic is meant that the toxicity (L.D. 50) of the surface active agent in the mouse is greater than 10 gms./kg. orally and 1 gm./kg. by intraperitoneal injection; such agents are usually non-ionic, and may be partial esters of fatty acids with sorbitan, or polyoxyethylene ethers thereof, or castor oil-polyoxyethylene ethers, e.g. "Span", "Tween" (registered Trade Marks), or Emulsov, respectively. Preferred surface active agents are polyethylene glycol monopalmitate, cotton seed oil monoglyceride-tartaric acid ester, e.g. "Drewmulse" (registered Trade Mark), and mixtures thereof. Oils used may be olive, peanut, poppy seed, cotton seed, walnut, wheat, cod-liver, chaulmoogra, or the products of the alcoholysis of such oils by lower alcohols, e.g. ethyl oleate, and their brominated or iodinated derivatives such as Ultra-Fluid Lipiodol. The oils may themselves form the therapeutic agent of the compositions, e.g. for X-ray contrast or intravenous feeding purposes, or may be carriers for liposoluble drugs, such as camphor, antimitotic agents, or vitamins A, D, E, F, or K. Examples are given for an X-ray contrast medium, a nutrient injectable composition, and a composition of a radio-active iodine labelled oil.
