Abstract

Fatty acids are stabilized by heating for less than 30 minutes at between 100 DEG and 150 DEG C. in the presence of less than 1% (calculated on the fatty acids) of boron trifluoride. The boron trifluoride is removed and the fatty acids distilled. Fatty acids from oleine, tallow and stearine are treated and the boron trifluoride may be in the form of a dihydrate or a complex with phosphoric acid.
