Abstract
1,081,514. Electro-physical measurements. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. May 12, 1965 [June 4, 1964], No. 20116/65. Heading G1N. The invention relates to automatic homogenity control in a gyromagnetic spectrometer having a probe 10 containing the unknown sample and a reference material (e.g. 1% tetramethyl silane), excited by an R. F. generator 14 to produce a spectral signal which is fed to a phase detector 18 providing audio output. Correcting Field Drift This output is passed to A. F. phase detectors 24, 36 and compared with phase controlled signals from A. F. generators 26, 34 operating at e. g. 2 kc/s and 3 kc/s to provide absorption and dispersion peaks. In operation the dispersion signal is used to control the field/frequency ratio if the polarizing field or frequency of the R. F. generator drifts causing the operating point to move from the zero position as illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown). Optimizing Field A further A. F. phase detector 42 is set to operate in the absorption mode, and its output is compared in an L. F. phase detector 48 with a signal from an L. F. generator which tends to modulate the supply to the shim coils 40 causing periodic changes in field gradient at the probe which periodically broadens the absorption peak from shape A to shape B Fig. 3 (not shown). The resultant output from the phase detector 42 and hence L. F. phase detector 48 operates the current control 52 to produce resonance lines having the greatest amplitude. Modifications. Fig. 5 (not shown) separate current controls may be used for each pair of shim coils. Fig. 7 (not shown) the control may be applied by a "sequencer" alternately to the shim coils and the "curvature coils" 80.
