Abstract
1,081,473. Grinding. J. P. ZACHEK. June 11, 1965 [July 22, 1964], No. 24849/65. Heading B3D. Apparatus for finishing the side wall surface or surfaces of elongated wall-like members 11 comprises at least one housing assembly 17, 18 secured beneath a frame 34, the or each housing assembly including at least one shaft 56, 59 rotatably secured thereto, finishing means 49, 52 secured to the shaft or shafts, and a driving assembly 12 mounted beneath the frame and arranged to ride along a top wall of the wall-like member. The member 11 may be of concrete or wood and one or both sides of the member may be ground or sanded by the apparatus. The frame 34 extends approximately the full width of the apparatus and the housing assemblies 17, 18 are carried beneath the frame by bolts 40 engaging slotted holes in the frame whereby the assemblies may be adjusted for wall-like members 11 of differing thicknesses. Additional, the assembly 18, and, if desired, the assembly 17, is mounted for adjustment, by means of a bolt 44 having nuts 47, 48 on opposite sides of a, plate 42 of the assembly, about a pivot 45 to enable a sloping wall to be finished as illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown)-. Each housing assembly has a pair of walls 71, 72 supporting a plurality of pairs of bearings 74, 78,. Fig. 8 (not shown), each pair of bearings rotatably supporting a sleeve 73 rigidly secured to a gear 76 having a key 78 extending, through the sleeve into an elongated keyway 75 in a shaft 57 ... 61, as the case may be. One end of each shaft is connected by a flexible coupling 62 to a grinding or sanding wheel 52 and the other end is connected by an adjuster 77 including a thrust bearing to the piston 86 of a cylinder 84. The cylinders are connected by lines 94, 144, a regulator 28 and gauge 29 to a compressor so that the grinding wheels 49 ... 54 are yieldably urged against the side surfaces of the wall-like member 11. The gears 76 on the sleeves are driven by a chain 132 from gears 130, 131, Fig. 6 (not shown), on a shaft 120 and the chains are tensioned by adjustable gears 132, 141. The shaft 120 includes a splined universal coupling 100 to accommodate the pivoting adjustment of the housing assembly 18, and is driven by a chain 116 from a shaft 110 having a pulley 109 driven by a belt 108 From a pulley 106 on a motordriven shaft 103, the motor 36, Fig. 7 (not shown), being of the gasolene type. Another pulley 104 on the shaft 103 drives the compressor 95. A chain drive 178, Fig. 6 (not shown), is connected between a gear 174 on the shaft 110 and a gear 176 on a shaft 180 carrying a disc 184 which is spring-urged into contact with the periphery of a friction disc 198 axially adjustable along a splined shaft 192 to vary the ratio of drive between the shafts 180 and 192. Shaft 192 is connected by a chain 201 to a gear 202 on a shaft 206 which includes universal couplings 208 and is connected by a reduction unit 166 to an axle 153 keyed to wheels 154 of the driving assembly 12 disposed beneath the frame 34. The axle carries a gear 164 connected by a ohain to a gear 163 on an axle 152 which in turn carries a pair of wheels and is connected by a chain 162 to an axle 151, the latter carrying a pair of wheels and being connected by a chain to an axle 150 also having a pair of wheels. The axles are supported by plates 158- from a housing 156 connected by parallel links 168, 169 to the frame 34, one of the links having an extension engaged by a screw 171 which, when rotated, adjuststhe driving assembly vertically with respect to the frame 34. The housing assemblies 17, 18 carry roller assemblies 214, 215 for engaging the side surfaces of the walllike member 11 to guide the apparatus as it moves along the member. Different sizes of grinding wheels may be mounted on the apparatus and one of the wheels of each assembly can be vertically adjusted to accommodate members 11 of different heights, and the engagement of the friction wheel 198 with the disc 184 can be adjusted to control the rate at which the driving assembly 12 moves the apparatus along the member. The frame 34 carries a pair of tanks 19, 20 containing water which is supplied through pipes 21, 22, Fig. 1 (not shown), to the grinding wheels, the water, in addition to lubricating the wheels, mixing with the concrete dust to form a slurry which acts to fill pot holes in the member. If only one surface of the member 11 is to be finished, one of the housing assemblies may be replaced by a unit 220, Fig. 3 (not shown), which merely has a roller 231 for guiding the apparatus.
