Abstract

Lubricating or fuel oil additives comprise a basic mixture of alkaline earth metal salts of acidic phosphorized substantially aliphatic hydrocarbolns, said mixture being characterized by a metal ratio of at least 2.5 and comprising (A) from 40 to 95 parts by weight of said metal salt having a metal ratio of at least 4, and (B) from 5 to 60 parts by weight of said metal salt having a metal ratio of not more than 2 (the metal ratio is the ratio of total chem. equiv. of metal in the salt as compared to the normal, i.e. neutral, salt). These salts are preferably prepared by phosphorizing an olefine polymer and then neutralizing the product with a basic metal reagent. The lubricating oils may be of synthetic, animal, vegetable or mineral origin. The preferred lubricating oils are fluid oils ranging in viscosity from 40 SUS at 100 DEG F. to 200 SUS at 210 DEG F. Other additives such as ashless detergents, supplemental metal-containing detergents, corrosion inhibitors, rust inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, load-carrying additives, anti-foam additives, pour-point depressants, viscosity index improving agents and additives to improve the frictional characteristics may be present. A series of tests are carried out using as lubricating oil a Mid-Continent conventionally refined petroleum oil having a viscosity of about 200 SUS at 100 DEG F., the additives being mixtures of basic and neutral or less basic barium salts of phosphorized polyisobutene or chlorinated polyisobutene. The following oil compositions are also exemplified:-(1) SAE 1OW30 mineral oil together with the basic and slightly basic or neutral barium salt of phosphorized polyisobutene or chlorinated polyisobutene. Zinc dioctylphosphorodithioate, zinc di-primary-pentyl phosphorodithioate and poly(alkylmethacrylate) may also be present; (2) catalytically cracked No. 2 light petroleum fuel oil together with basic and slightly basic barium salts as in (1); (3) SAE 20, 30 or 90 mineral oil together with basic and slightly basic or neutral barium salts as in (1). Dibutyl tetrasulphide and 2,6-ditertiary-butyl -4-methylphenol may also be present.ALSO:A basic mixture consists of alkaline earth metal salts of acidic phosphorized substantially aliphatic hydrocarbons, said mixture being characterized by a metal ratio of at least 2.5 and comprising (A) from 40 to 95 parts by weight of said metal salt having a metal ratio of at least 4 and (B) from 5 to 60 parts by weight of said metal salt having a metal ratio of not more than 2 (the metal ratio is the ratio of total chem. equiv. of metal in the salt as compared to the normal, i.e. neutral, salt). The salts are preferably prepared by treating an olefine polymer, preferably polyisobutylene, with a phosphorizing agent, e.g. a phosphorus sulphide, phosphorus thiochloride or thiobromide, chlorine and phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus trichloride or yellow phosphorus and sulphur, yellow phosphorus and sulphur monochloride or dichloride and phosphorus trichloride or tribromide, and then neutralizing the product with a basic metal reagent. Preferably the phosphorized olefine polymer is first hydrolysed by treatment with water or steam and then neutralized. The basic compounds which may be used for neutralization are the oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, alcoholates, phenates, sulphides, hydrides and bicarbonates of magnesium, calcium, barium and strontium. The elemental metals may also be used. The neutralization mixture may contain a promoting agent e.g. an alcohol, phenol, amine or thiol, and the mixture of phosphorized olefine polymer and neutralization mixture may be treated with carbon dioxide. The mixture of alkaline earth metal salts may be used as a lubricating oil additive.
