Abstract

A lubricating and cooling composition for cold rolling comprises an aqueous solution containing from 0.1 to 15% by weight of an ester of an acid of phosphorus having the formula <FORM:1081285/C4-C5/1> wherein x is an integer from 1 to 500, y is 0 or an integer from 1 to 500, x plus y is an integer of more than 14 and y/x has a value of 0 to 15, n is 1 or 2, m is 0 or 1 and n plus m equals 2, z is an integer from 1 to 3, R represents (a) hydrogen, (b) alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (c) alkenyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (d) phenyl, (e) alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms, (f) sorbitan monolaurate, (g) <FORM:1081285/C4-C5/2> wherein R111 is alkyl or alkenyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (h) <FORM:1081285/C4-C5/3> wherein n1 is an integer from 1 to 500 or (i) <FORM:1081285/C4-C5/4> wherein X is -(C2H4O)n11H wherein n11 is an integer from 1 to 500, R1 is hydrogen, alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms or <FORM:1081285/C4-C5/5> wherein Y is hydrogen, alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms or <FORM:1081285/C4-C5/6> wherein R, x and y are as stated above and R11 is alkyl containing up to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl or alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms.ALSO:The invention comprises esters of acids of phosphorus having the formula <FORM:1081285/C3/1> wherein x is an integer from 1 to 500, y is 0 or an integer from 1 to 500, x plus y is an integer of more than 14 and y/x has a value of 0 to 15, n is 1 or 2, m is 0 or 1 and n plus m equals 2, z is an integer from 1 to 3, R represents (a) hydrogen, (b) alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (c) alkenyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (d) phenyl, (e) alkyl phenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms, (f) sorbitan monolaurate, (g) <FORM:1081285/C3/2> wherein R111 is alkyl or alkenyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (h) <FORM:1081285/C3/3> wherein n1 is an integer from 1 to 500 or (i) <FORM:1081285/C3/4> wherein X is -(C2H4O)n11H wherein n11 is an integer from 1 to 500, R1 is hydrogen, alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms or <FORM:1081285/C3/5> wherein Y is hydrogen, alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms or RO[(C2H4O)x(C3H6O)y] wherein R, x and y are as stated above and R1 is alkyl containing up to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl or alkyl phenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms. The compounds may conveniently be divided into three categories, namely, (I) acid and neutral hydroxy polyoxyalkylene alkyl and aryl phosphate esters, (II) esters of Group (I) where the terminal hydroxy group of the polyoxyalkyl radical has been replaced by an end group -OR and (III) polymeric phosphate esters. Compounds of category (I) may be prepared by reacting a mono- or dialkyl acid phosphate or mixtures thereof (or similar alkylphenyl acid phosphates) with a polyoxyalkylene glycol of the formula [HO(C2H4O)x(C3H6O)y]H at temperatures of 130 DEG to 225 DEG C., the mole ratio of glycol to phosphate ester being less than 1. Compounds of category (II) may be produced in the same manner as category (I) except that in the glycol reactant one of the hydroxy groups will be replaced by the group -OR. The compounds of category (III) may be prepared in the same way as category (I) compounds except that the mole ratio of glycol to phosphate ester should be greater than 1. The compounds may be used in lubricating and cooling compositions (See Division )ALSO:The invention comprises esters of acids of phosphorus having the formula <FORM:1081285/C2/1> wherein x is an integer from 1 to 500, y is 0 or an integer from 1 to 500, x plus y is an integer of more than 14 and y/x has a value of 0 to 15, n is 1 or 2, m is 0 or 1 and n plus m equals 2, z is an integer from 1 to 3, R represents (a) hydrogen, (b) alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (c) alkenyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (d) phenyl, (e) alkyl phenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms, (f) sorbitan monolenate, (g) <FORM:1081285/C2/2> wherein R111 is alkyl or alkenyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (h): <FORM:1081285/C2/3> wherein n1 is an integer from 1 to 500 or (i) <FORM:1081285/C2/4> wherein X is -(C2H4O)n H, wherein n11 is an n11 is an integer from 1 to 500, R1 is hydrogen, alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, alkyl phenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms or <FORM:1081285/C2/5> wherein Y is hydrogen, alkyl containing from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, alkylphenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms or RO[C2H4O)x(C3H6O)y] wherein R, x and y are as stated above, and R11 is alkyl containing up to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl or alkyl phenyl containing up to 15 carbon atoms. The compounds may conveniently be divided into three categories, namely, (I) acid and neutral hydroxy polyoxy-alkylene alkyl and aryl phosphate esters, (II) esters of group (I) where the terminal hydroxyl group of the polyoxyalkyl radical has been replaced by an end group RO and (III) polymeric phosphate esters. Compounds of category (I) may be prepared by reacting a mono- or dialkyl acid phosphate or mixtures thereof (or similar alkylphenyl acid phosphate) with a polyoxy-alkylene glycol of the formula [HO(C2H4O)x(C3H6O)y]H at temperatures of 130 DEG to 225 DEG C., the mole ratio of glycol to phosphate ester being less than 1. Compounds of category (II) may be produced in the same manner as category (I) except that in the glycol reactant one of the hydroxyl groups will be replaced by the group -OR. The compounds of category (III) may be prepared in the same way as category (I) compounds except that the mole ratio of glycol to phosphate ester should be greater than 1. The compounds may be used in lubricating and cooling compositions (see Division C5).
