Abstract

Mineral-loaded polymeric materials are prepared by mixing together an aqueous suspension of a mineral filler the particles of which have been coated to render them hydrophobic and a solution of a hydrophobic polymer in a water-immiscible organic solvent, agitating the mixture until at least a substantial proportion of the filler enters the organic phase, separating the organic phase and removing solvent and water therefrom. Specified polymers are polymers and copolymers of chloroprene, styrene/butadiene copolymers, butyl rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene, polyhexene-1, copolymers of ethylene with propylene or butene-1, copolymers of a -monoolefins with dicyclopentadiene, cyclopentadiene, norbornene derivatives, 2-alkyl-2,5-norbornadiene or 1,5-cyclooctadiene, and natural rubber. Specified solvents are hexane, cyclohexane, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, orthodichloro-benzene, benzene, toluene and xylene. Specified fillers are calcium carbonate, magnesium silicate and calcined kaolin. The products may be vulcanized and used in the manufacture of shoe soles and heels, garden hoses and wire coverings. In examples tetrachloroethylene solutions of ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene copolymers are mixed with water and (1) magnesium silicate, (2) calcined kaolin and (3) calcium carbonate or calcined kaolin, and filled copolymers blended with naphthenic oil, zinc oxide, sulphur, tetramethylthiuram monosulphide and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and vulcanized.
