Abstract

Solvents are purified by contacting them with a solution of an alkaline earth or alkali metal in a liquid medium containing ammonia and isolating the purified solvent, said solvent being one which does not itself react with the metal, e.g. an ether. Hydroxyl group impurities are thereby removed. The liquid medium is suitably liquid ammonia itself. The examples describe the purification of diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, 1,2-dimethoxy ethane and tetrahydrofuran.
