Abstract

1,080,321. Moulding sliding-clasp fastener stringers. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 1, 1964, No. 35815/64. Heading B5A. A sliding-clasp fastener stringer is made by winding a synthetic plastic filament F, e.g. of nylon, about a mandrel 41 to tightly enclose two inelastic strands S and C, the coiled filament being removed from the mandrel by tension applied primarily to the cords. In operation, a filament F, is led from a freely rotatable reel (30), Fig. 1 (not shown), and strands (S) and (C) of different diameters are taken from reels (63), (62) respectively through a stationary tube (35) and along the length of a mandrel 41, Fig. 3, fixed thereto, the filament F being wound under tension around the strands and the mandrel 41 subsequent to shaping action at a die 47. The die 47 is rotatably mounted in a rotating carriage 25 and performs one revolution about its own axis for one revolution of the carriage. Heads are formed on the filament by a tool (50), Fig. 7 (not shown), actuated by a cam (52) and at the same time the longer sides of the coils are flattened against die (47) by a tool (51) whose arms (54), (55), joined by a resilient cross-piece (56), are urged together by pusher slides (58) actuated by cams (59b), (60b). A further cam 61 may be used to provide heads opposite to those formed by cam (62). The filament F is unwound from die (47) in its passage to mandrel 41, Fig. 3, but the " memory " characteristics of the material facilitate resumption of coiling about the mandrel and the tight enclosure of strands S and C which tend to resume positions at opposite ends of the mandrel, see Fig. 8 (not reproduced). The formed coil is taken off by a drum 65, notched at its periphery 66 to receive the heads, the coil being heated to set by a shoe 73 and subsequently stripped from the drum by an idler wheel 75. A second embodiment of tool (51) is described, Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), whose arms (81), (82) are sufficiently resilient to provide a forward pushing action on the material of the filament as well as lateral compression against die (47) so that more material is available for the formation of the heads.
