Abstract
1,079,791. Ceetripetal extruders. HERCULES Inc. Feb. 1, 1965 [Feb. 19, 1964], No. 4372/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B1] An extrusion moulding machine, or plasticizer, for use in conjunction with injectionmoulding machines, is particularly intended for use with synthetic thermoplastic resins, and comprises a fixed disc 1 provided with a spiral ridge 2, and an imperforate disc 7 mounted for rotation with a screw impeller 23, the discs 1 and 7 and ridge 2 forming a helical passageway between a hopper 17 and a central aperture 4. Disc 1 is provided with electrical or fluid heaters 21, and in operation, material fed from hopper 17 by screw impeller 18 and/or by gravity is urged along the helical passageway by disc 7, the material being plasticized prior to emergence through aperture 4. It is stated that the decrease in volume of the material consequent on plasticization is compensated for for by having channel (O), Fig. 2 (not shown), of greater width than channels (3), which are of equal width, and by the fact that the velocity of the material-contacting surface of disc 7 increases towards its periphery. Also blending, e.g. of polymers with additives such as lubricants, stabilizers or pigments, is effective in the helical passageway since substantial reverse flow of the material may take place. Disc 7, Fig. 3, is axially adjustable by movement of a ring 13 on threaded shaft 14 and barrel 24 of impeller 23 may have heaters 27 similar to heaters 21. In a second embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the screw impeller is dispensed with. Materials mentioned are polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate and carbon black as an additive. Types of extrusion mentioned are film, filament and tube making, wire coating, pelletizing and in association with blow-moulding.
