Abstract

1,079,671. Rolling; sheet metal feeds; making sheets; winding; straightening. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Jan. 6, 1965 [Jan. 8, 1964], No. 635/65. Headings B3A, B3E and B3M. [Also in Division B8] In a continuous cold reduction strip mill, the end of a coil of strip C, Fig. 1, is passed through a roller leveller 49 to a shear 52, the strip is then withdrawn, a coil cradle 30 is indexed through 90 degrees, and the coil is passed to an uncoiler 72, from whence the end of the coil is passed through a roller leveller 74, a welder 75, and a hole punch 75P, a second shear 76, a flash trimmer 78, rollers 79, a strip accumulator 81, a weld detector 83, five stand rolls 85-89, thickness gauges 90, 91, a second weld detector 92, pinch rolls 93, and a roller-cutter flying shear 94, and is taken up on a re-coiler 95. During rolling when the trailing end of a strip reaches shear 76, pinch rolls 80 are stopped, a squaring guide 77 aligns the strip, and the end is cropped. Rolls 80 are reversed, and the trailing end is moved to welder 75, at which time the leading end of the next strip has arrived at the welder. The ends of the strips are joined, and a hole is punched adjacent the weld, so as to operate weld detectors 83, 92 later. When weld detector 83 detects a weld in the strip, it supplies a signal to control 106, whereupon the feed of the strip is slowed down. The strips are welded together at an angle so that the impact on the rolls is reduced. When the weld passes detector 92 the feed rate is increased. A coil centring device 4 is provided on the end of the conveyer 2, and comprises a pair of side plates moved by racks and pinions (18), (20), Fig. 4 (not shown), actuated by air cylinders (16), the movements of the plates are equalized by sprockets and a chain 24, 26. The coil to be processed is rolled from a ramp on to a cradle 30 and the latter comprises a plate (36), Figs. 5, 6 and 7 (not shown), pivotally mounted on a base (32) which is indexible by worm and wheel gearing (34). A pair of rollers 42 is carried on the base, and the rollers are driven by a reversible motor (45) through chain (46). Roller levellers 49 and 74 each comprise a pair of pinch rolls (57, 58), Fig. 9 (not shown), fixed rolls (53), and upper rolls (54). Rolls (58) and (54) are carried in vertically adjustable blocks (59), (55), and an upper frame (61) is adjustable by air cylinders (62). A squaring guide 50, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), comprises a pair of shafts (63) having right and left-hand threads (63R), (63L), which are rotatable by a motor (67) and sprockets and chain (69-71). Side guides (65) are mounted for adjustment on the shafts. Cone-type uncoiler 72 comprises side plates 72S, Fig. 13 (not shown), a pivoted platform 72P, coil support rollers (72R), an hydraulic ram (72H) for supporting the rollers, and an air cylinder (72C) for pivoting the platform. When the coil is almost used up, it is passed from uncoiler 72 to a standard coil box 73. The leading end of a coil carried in cradle (30) is fed into levellers 49, 74 by a magnet (104), Fig. 13 (not shown), supported by a jib crane 96. The crane comprises a frame (97) which pivotally supports an I-beam 98, the free end of which is supported from a curved I-beam track 100 by a motor powered monorail trolley 101. A second trolley 102 is movably mounted on the beam, and supports a motor-powered hoist (103), from which magnet (104) depends. Speed control 85S-89S and screw-down controls 85D-89D are provided for controlling the speeds of stands 85-89. Coiler 95 comprises upper and lower reel blocks 95U (95L) either of which can be brought into the take-up position.
