Abstract

1,079,612. Protecting guards. J. F. GORMAN. June 22, 1965 [March 23, 1964], No. 7549/64. Heading B7B. A collision protecting guard comprises a distendible member 5 housed in a casing secured to the vehicle roof the member being inflated with a plastics foam generated on impact or at will. The foam constituents are normally separated by the wall 24 of the container for one constituent and forcible mixing of the components occurs when the double ended cartridge 22, 31 is fired electrically. Gas generated above the flexible wall 21 when the cartridge 22 is fired forces the foam into the member 5 so that it extends downwards around the vehicle occupant. The casing housing the apparatus is removable from the vehicle roof for replacement purposes.
