[Also in Division G3] In apparatus for processing flexible material, e.g. printing numbered marks at one yard intervals on P.V.C. covered cable, the processing device is driven by an electric motor whose speed is controlled in response to the difference in angular position of the processing device and a metering wheel in contact with the cable, which is drawn through the machine by separate means. The difference signal is preferably derived from a rotatable potentiometer, the wiper being coupled to the metering wheel and the winding rotated by the motor. The centre of the winding is kept at earth potential and when the slider is displaced from this point a voltage of appropriate sign is developed and applied to a transistor amplifier to energize one half or the other of the motor's split field; its armature is energized with constant current. The amplifier includes a resistance/capacitance stabilizing circuit. For the cable printing application a counter operated by the printer causes the cable to be slowed and then stopped and severed at a predetermined count. The printing device (Fig. 2, not shown) rotates on a shaft (16) and comprises a pair of printing wheels (26) which contact the cable once per revolution and are indexed by a stationary cam (20). Either an inked ribbon (27) or an inking roller (29) is used. It is stated that two separate potentiometers may be used for the error signal generator, and an alternative application is to correlate the head speed of a twisting, cabling or stranding machine to the linear speed of the cable.
