Abstract

1,079,308. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. May 4, 1966 [June 18, 1965], No. 19732/66. Heading G6C. A fuel cartridge for location in alignment with identical fuel cartridges in a fuel channel of a nuclear reactor comprises at least one plate of clad fuel material parallel to the channel axis, the maximum length of the plate(s) along the channel axis being at most equal to half the overall length of the cartridge. This arrangement serves to reduce the coolant pressure drop within the channel for a given thermal flux or to increase the thermal flux for a given pressure drop. As shown in Fig. 1, a fuel cartridge comprises a graphite sleeve 6 through which a coolant fluid, e.g. CO 2 under pressure, circulates in the direction of the arrow f, a collar 10 placed within a recess of the sleeve 6 and integral with a spider 12, and a clad fuel plate 14 supported by the spider 12. The fuel plate 14 is spirally wound and surrounded by a metallic support ring 15 provided with longitudinal flutes in the zone opposite the fuel plate 14. These flutes bear against the outer turn of the fuel plate 14 which is thus secured against lateral movement. The support ring 15 is clamped between the sleeve 6 and the collar 10 at its lower end and between the sleeve 6 and a locking collet 18 at its upper end. The successive turns of the fuel plate 14 are maintained in equi-spaced relation by means of connecting wires 16 arranged crosswise. The cladding of the fuel plate 14 may consist of zirconium alloyed with copper. Instead of a spiral fuel plate, it is possible to utilize a number of parallel flat plates or concentric plates. Corrugations of very small depth may be formed over the cladding surface, which surface remains smooth on a macroscopic scale. The collet 18 is provided with an annular grappling recess 20 whereby the fuel cartridge can be handled as a single unit by means of a conventional grab.
