Abstract
Tin of particle size 1 - 300 m is surface activated with an alkali metal, e.g. Na, by adding the liquid alkali metal to a fluidized bed of the tin particles at 120 DEG C. The fluidizing gas is He or Ar the activated tin can be heated to 100 - 200 DEG C. to diffuse the alkali metal into the tin to form an alloy. The tin can contain 1 - 35% wt of alkali metal.ALSO:Organo tin halides are prepared by reacting alkyl aryl or cycloalkyl halides with Sn which has a particle size within the range 1 to 300m . The reaction temperature may be at least 100 DEG C. The surface of the tin may be activated by treatment with an alkali metal, e.g. 1-33 wt. per cent. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of iodine or an iodine containing catalyst, e.g. HgI2, MgI2ZnI2 and C4H9I, and under a pressure of up to 150 p.s.i., and in an inert solvent, e.g. aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, esters and polychloro benzene and diphenyls. The product may be recovered by distillation filtration or centrifugation or by precipitation of the product tin oxides or amine complexes.
